The hardcoded layer is the parent theme itself: archive templates, single post layouts, header logic, and WooCommerce overrides. If you need safe edits, do them in a child theme. Parent theme edits get wiped on update, no debate.
Asset-wise, the heavy hitters are theme CSS, icon packs, WPBakery frontend scripts, plus WooCommerce and donation plugin JS. When caching is aggressive, I check DevTools → Console first for jquery errors, then Network for delayed or merged files like js_composer_front.min.js, wc-add-to-cart-variation, and donation-form scripts.
Where it tends to crack
The most common break is after optimization. Delay/minify can kill the mobile menu, donation amount selector, or Woo variation logic. Fastest fix: in your cache plugin, exclude jquery-core, js_composer_front.min.js, and wc-add-to-cart-variation from delay/defer. If donation forms stop responding, exclude the GiveWP frontend script too.
The second pain point is outdated Woo template overrides inside the theme. After a WooCommerce update, cart or account templates can throw notices or weird markup. I fix it by checking WooCommerce → Status → Templates, then updating the theme or patching overrides in the child theme instead of hacking core files.
